We make our first stop in the slightly larger village “Arkalochori”. Most residents are occupied with the cultivation of olives, grapes and grain. At the cemetery is the Byzantine Cross Church of Archangel Michael (Michael Archaggelos). arkalochori-768x576In the church we find murals of the Cretan School of icon painting of the 14th and 15th century.

Viannos is located south of the mountain Dikti 40km from Ierapetra. On our way to the south we arrive at the memorial of Arvi which reminds of the terrible time of the 2.nd World War. This incident is also referred to “Holocaust of Viannos”.
